busting more common icloud myths

Not sure how iCloud storage works? Earlier this year I wrote a blog post busting common iCloud myths and it’s time to set the record straight on a few more. Most of us use iCloud every day, but it can be really confusing if you haven’t taken the time to learn how it works.

how iCloud storage works, busting five common iCloud misconceptions

5 More Common Misconceptions About iCloud

“IF I USE ICLOUD, I CAN NEVER STOP.”

FALSE. While they don’t make it simple to download or export your items, it is possible. My Backup Bootcamp course walks step-by-step through downloading your iCloud contents (for Mac or PC).

“ICLOUD IS NOT SAFE OR PRIVATE.”

FALSE. Apple really values privacy. Most of their features process on-device for maximum privacy and your data in iCloud is encrypted for security. Just like anything, the security hinges on how well you guard your login information- make sure you use a strong password for your iCloud account!

“IF I USE ICLOUD FAMILY SHARING, EVERYONE WILL HAVE ACCESS TO MY PHOTOS.”

FALSE. Because Apple values privacy, everything is kept private by Apple ID. Family Sharing allows you to share the storage space (one payment) but does not share content or data across people.

“I SHOULD CREATE A NEW APPLE ID WHEN I GET A NEW PHONE SO I CAN START FRESH.”

FALSE. Absolutely not. Your Apple ID is meant to travel with you to new devices. It contains the data to facilitate seamless and automatic setup of a new device.

“ICLOUD IS SOMEWHERE UP IN THIN AIR.”

FALSE. The cloud is made up of many physical data centers- a network of remote servers. A recent study from MIT shared: “The Cloud now has a greater carbon footprint than the airline industry. A single data center can consume the equivalent electricity of 50,000 homes.” The cloud is not up in thin air, it is here on earth with very tangible environmental impacts.
