iCloud is a cloud service created by Apple. It lets you store data like photos, documents, contacts, passwords and more on Apple’s servers so they can be retrieved if your device fails.
iCloud syncs all devices connected to the Apple ID so you can view/access the same content in all places. It is enabled automatically on all Apple devices unless you disable it in Settings.
What does Sync mean?
The most important thing to understand about iCloud is that it is a sync- when you make a change on one device, it simultaneously happens in iCloud and all synced devices. With iCloud enabled, what you see on your phone = iCloud.
Deleting a photo off your camera roll IS deleting the photo from iCloud. It also removes them from other devices connected to iCloud under that Apple ID.
It is all or nothing. It’s either on or off for a device. For example, if you have iCloud enabled for your Photos, 100% of the photos that exist in iCloud are visible in your camera roll. There are no ‘other’ items sitting “in the cloud” somewhere that you do not see on your phone. (Well, unless you have created more than one Apple ID over the years, but generally that is not the case.)
All or nothing also means you cannot have iCloud only display certain photos on your phone while keeping the rest on your computer. When iCloud is on for both devices they must match- that’s what it means to have devices sync. Read more about common iCloud myths.
